STREET DANCE ACTIVISM in front of LA MAYOR GARCETTI'S HOUSE. Teaching the Black Lives Matter: Los Angeles Occupiers THE WHIP and the NAE NAE!!!! We were NOT performing for Mayor Garcetti, we were being unapologetically Black and disrupting that predominantly white space of Hancock Park. No business as usual. Most significantly, dancing (all forms of art) is a significant aspect of our self care. We are cultural producers and that has never been separated from our politics. Look at this unity. The different generations dancing to the black youth's latest dance craze is powerful. Our youth's cultural production and witty dances are not "ratchet" and must we even engage in respectability politics when we are dancing for our own liberation, pleasure, and sustainability? Context is key. We werent drunk and being "ratchet". This "ratchetness" or dances displayed in this video connects with youth and we meet them where they are. The "nae nae" and "whip" are current dance crazes that were simple enough to bridge generational gaps. We are not here for the white gaze, or the "new black" gaze, thanks. Maybe we should have done Alvin Ailey's "Revelations" out there...or nah. We also uploaded videos of our drum circle and what went viral is what connected with the Black youth. #allblackculturalproductionmatters Patrisse Marie Cullors-Brignac Deidra Krucial Cooper Melina Abdullah #occupylamayor #blacklivesmatte #LAwakeupcall
